Week of October 20, 2008
After some reshuffling, Academic Enrichment has now moved to the middle of the day, during the kids’ reading and work time! We are excited about this change because it reflects our goal of working with students in small groups to ensure that they are able to realize some true, day-to-day, added-value academically. Students have been placed in small groups of about 6-8, working on strengthening specific skills identified by their teachers, and through our work with them over the term. Please feel free to contact me, Tracy Dowdell, Education Coordinator, at tdowdell@atlantachartermiddleschool.com if there are other academic concerns you feel your child may have that might be best addressed in this setting. This week, our Wednesday class will work on set design for their newscast. Each team will be given materials and tasked with designing a set that reflects their news team. They will also do some trial runs of their entire newscast as well, being captured on film, so that they can make changes and ensure a fluid, totally awesome, newscast next week!

Week of October 6, 2008
Welcome to Social Studies Month! This month in our T, Th classes, we will focus on the Election and the importance of civic responsibility. The kids kicked off Social Studies month with a lively Election Trivia game. The game served as a basic introduction to this year’s Presidential election and the election process in general. Congratulations to Santiago, Helen, Ethan, and Reggie in 6A and , in 6B Willem, Donte, and Keegan, winners of the first Election coverage trivia joust!
Our Wednesday class will continue in production of their newscast. All of the kids have done research on their segments and this week, will work on fine tuning their speeches, presentation skills, and set design for their stations. The camera will be rolling, catching them all in the act!

Welcome to Social Studies Month! This month in our T, Th classes, we will focus on the Election and the importance of civic responsibility. Week of September 30, 2008
This week our T, Th classes are working in small groups utilizing divisibility tips to practice long division problems. We also will talk with the kids about the cumulative nature of math and the importance of reinforcement and practice of mathematical foundations like adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. The kids will then have a multiplication drill and more practice applying those foundational skills relative to their math levels either through a problem solving exercise or an “out on the town at Outback” menu exercise. As we move into October, the students will move into Social Studies Month where we will focus primarily on the upcoming election and ideas around civic duty, the election process, and understanding the positions and ideas of the 2008 Presidential candidates.
Our Wednesday class began their research for the production of their newscast. The students were divided into groups and each group member is responsible for a particular segment of the news. They are also working on fine tuning the script they will use for their particular segment making sure that the content is relevant, and that good writing mechanics are in place. Next week, they will begin videotaping parts of the process and working on the set design for their stations. Look out for your child caught on tape!
